ENCOURAGE YOUNGER GENERATION TO EMBRACE YORUBA CULTURE-EDU. COMM

The Ogun State Government believes the younger generation needs to be encouraged to embrace history and culture of the Yoruba tribe, so as to promote her heritage and prevent it from going into extinction.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu brought this to the fore while receiving copies of a published book by a Nigerian Doctor and Yoruba Enthusiast based in United States of America, Dr. Oladele Olusanya, titled 'Gods and Heroes, Itan Legends of the Golden Age’.

Prof. Arigbabu noted that literary write-up, art and crafts among other intellectual work would help learners identify with their roots, adding that Yoruba tradition is endowed with values which could impact positively on the younger ones.

Presenting the book on behalf of the author, the founder, Shyllon Arts Foundation, Engr. Yemisi Shyllon, said it was the wish of the author to promote the Yoruba history and culture at home and in the diaspora.

Shyllon who applauded government for re-introducing history in the school curriculum, said it would allow people who have lost touch with their roots learn and familiarise themselves with it.

Meanwhile, Prof. Arigbabu said the government would continue to support youths that are enthusiastic about sports to excel at all levels.

He stated this at the final football match competition of National Principal Cup, at M.K.O Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, saying it would help channel their energy to good use through sporting activities.

Arigbabu added that the competition was played across the four divisions of the State, with the finals played between Orile Ilugun Comprehensive College, Odeda and African Church Comprehensive High School, Ewupe, Ota, where Orile Ilugun emerged as the winner with 3 goals to 1.

"I am here personally to cheer up our students because I want them to win at the national level and make Ogun State proud. We want to channel the energy of our children positively, students that have lot of potentials in this field will be encouraged", the Commissioner reiterated.
