  IMPROVED IGR: FORUM HINGES PERFORMANCE ON REGULAR TRAINING  

Training and retraining of Inspector of Taxes for improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has been identified as one of the means that will enable Ogun State cope with challenges of dwindling revenue from the Federal Allocation.


The new Chairman of Inspector of Taxes Forum in the State, Alhaji Adeleke Asiwaju said this at its general meeting held at the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) headquarters in Abeokuta

Asiwaju said tax officers in the State who constitute members of the Forum needed to acquire more skills to keep them abreast of global best practice of collecting revenue, through voluntary compliance to payment of taxes.

"The world is growing at a supersonic speed, Information Communication Technology (ICT) has transformed the ways which activities are carried out from analog to modern, it is faster and highly digitalised.  Tax Inspectors should be trained and retrained in modern, efficient and effective system of revenue collection.

‘’ Our Forum is planning to organise seminars that will incorporate all revenue generating agencies on ways and means of improving Ogun State Internally Generated Revenue. We have prepared a proposal on how Ogun State Government can generate additional revenue", he said.

According to him, the proposed training would expose the Inspector of Taxes to other avenues that could be explored to expand the State tax net and encourage taxable residents to voluntarily comply with payment of taxes.

In his remarks, a former Vice Chairman of the Forum and Director of Tax Operations, OGIRS, Mr. Olugbenga Akinfenwa said  it was to foster unity among members , initiate more trainings to sharpen their skills in the area of revenue generation, share experience and enable the younger ones learn from the seniors, so as to perform optimally and meet the revenue target of the government.

Also speaking on behalf of other members, the Director of Other Taxes, OGIRS, Mrs .Olubisi Ajomale  pledged their support to the new Chairman, wishing him a successful tenure.
