Towards ensuring a hitch-free Local Government polls, all ad-hoc staff, including Returning Officers, Presiding Officers, Poll Clerk and Poll Orderly, currently being considered by the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) will be exposed to required training.
OGSIEC Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu who dropped the hint in Abeokuta, while speaking on the preparation for the conduct of the July 24 LG elections, revealed that the training was necessary to guide and teach them on electoral procedures, to avoid actions that may mar the process.
Shedding light on the roles of electoral officers and ad-hoc staff, Osibodu said that they were expected to coordinate and monitor the elections in various Local Government Areas and Wards.
“The essence of training cannot be over-emphasised in our determination to ensure that we achieve seamless Local Government elections in Ogun State. Just as we demonstrated transparency in the screening of Electoral Officers in the 20 Local Government Areas, we will also replicate that for the Returning officers, Presiding Officers and others. But beyond being transparent, we shall expose the ad-hoc staff to intensive training that will further enhance their capacity”, the Chairman said.
He added that Presiding Officers would be responsible for the coordination of the electoral process in polling booths, while the Poll Clerk and Poll Orderly are expected to ensure voters’ names correspond with their photographs, voters are given ballot papers, cast their vote in orderly manner, among others.
Osibodu who enjoined anyone above 18 years, with a minimum of Secondary School Certificate and willing to work as an ad-hoc staff to visit the Commission’s website on http:ogsiec.ogunstate.gov.ng to complete the form, said recruitment process was ongoing, adding that the Commission was working in synergy with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Abeokuta for the safekeep of sensitive materials.
