  BUSINESS DISPUTES SETTLEMENT, SMALL CLAIMS COURT TO THE RESCUE IN OGUN

Henceforth in Ogun State, cases and disputes in business transactions between two parties of not more than one million naira will be settled amicably in Small Claims Courts without the involvement of lawyers, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran has disclosed.

Adeniran made this revelation at a training on capacity building programme for Law Officers and Magistrates in-charge of Small Claims Courts, at the State High Court, Abeokuta.

This initiative, he said became imperative as the Small Claims Court plays a vital role in the World Bank ease of doing business ranking under enforcing contracts indicator, saying, “it will ensure speedy and inexpensive resolution of disputes”.

On his part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, Mr. Mustapha Olumide pointed out that Nigeria had been rated as one of the top 10 improved economy in the world, adding that Ogun State had also moved up on its ranking through the assessment of World Bank on the ease of doing business.

In her presentation, a Judge at the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Adebisi Femi-Segun noted that the training was to examine the operations of the Small Claims Courts to address challenges faced in enforcement of judgements and discuss possible solutions or recommendations.

Justice Femi-Segun advised that more awareness programmes should be organised to enlighten people on the benefits of Small Claim Courts, affirming that the Courts have recorded remarkable achievements in many countries.
