FAKE NEWS INIMICAL TO NATION'S PEACE, STABILITY- SPEAKER

FAKE NEWS INIMICAL TO NATION'S PEACE, STABILITY- SPEAKER

The Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo has urged social media users to be wary of antics of the purveyors of fake news, as misinformation in whatever form is capable of creating fear in the minds of the people, which is detrimental to the peace and progress of the State and nation at large.

Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo stated this while responding to the submission of a member representing Odeda State Constituency, Oludaisi Elemide and his Yewa North II counterpart, Wahab Haruna who both spoke under Personal Explanation at the plenary session at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Oluomo, who condemned the rising spate of falsehood in the guise of news stories for public consumption, especially through broadcast messages, called on the people to always verify the contents of their reports before conveying same to others, saying, “this would assist in giving credible information to security agencies in responding to the rising spate of insecurity bedeviling the nation”.

Commenting on the unlawful arrest and detention of a resident, Dr. Kunle Garb of Igbokofin, a border town in Yewa North Local Government Area, by the Beninoise security, the Speaker lauded the intervention of the State Government, especially on the engagement of the Federal Government, to facilitate the immediate release of the activist, calling on the residents to continue to be peaceful and law-abiding, as government had stepped into the matter.

Earlier in his presentation, Hon. Haruna informed the Assembly of the efforts of the State Government at facilitating the release of Dr. Garb, who was to be released last Thursday, but still in the custody of Benin Republic security officials.

On his part, Hon. Elemide appreciated the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his immediate response in putting together stakeholders' meeting to broker peace at Olokemeji village and the intervention of the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, which led to restoration of peace and combing of the forest reserve for the arrest of bandits operating within the area.
