LUTH gets 32-bed dialysis, renal centre from Lions Clubs

Lions Clubs International District 404-A1, Nigeria in partnership with the management of Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH) has commissioned a 32-bed Dialysis Centre and Renal Institute.

In his message, Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chris Bode, described the newly commissioned Lion Isaac Olusola Dada Dialysis Centre and Renal Institute as the largest Dialysis Centre and Nephrology Institute in the West Africa region, saying it is the biggest philanthropic donation to the institution.

Speaking on the importance of the centre, he said, “This novel collaboration is not only the biggest philanthropic donation to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH), it has also been cited in the institution as the largest Dialysis Centre and Nephrology Institute in the West African direction.

“It has opened a door of challenges to large-pocketed personalities and corporate bodies, pointing the way to how our dreams and commitments can be of benefit to those in need.

“Although Nigeria has over 200 million population, over one per cent of the population will need dialysis at a point in their lives. Having 32 beds have given us the bragging right because we have the manpower to cater for these needs. We are hoping we will be doing over a thousand cases per month When It wraps up.

“Our gratitude goes to the Lions Clubs District 401-AI, the Dada Family and the many donors who made this great gesture possible. The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has attracted a TETFUND grant of N1billion to equip a Nephrology Research Centre on the last floor of this building.

“I wish to thank the Board Chairman of LUTH, Alhaji Isa Bello Sali and the LUTH Management board for their purposeful leadership. We promise to put this grand edifice to good use for the sake of humanity.”

LUTH Management Board chairman, Alhaji Isa Bello Sali described the edifice as the biggest Independence anniversary gift Nigeria has ever received, stressing, “This gesture should give all Nigerians the assurance that all hope is not lost in humanity, as we still have people who still think of others and go out of their ways to use what God has endowed them with to assist those in needs.

“This occasion is an opportunity to thank all medical staff and public health workers for calling off their strike and returning to work to carry out their divine responsibilities of caring for the distressed Nigerians are carried out.

“This gesture, perhaps, is the biggest independence anniversary gift that Nigeria has received on the occasion of her 61st Independence anniversary.”

Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire who was represented by Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Mamuda Mamman, said, “The project being commissioned today will no doubt improve the overall healthcare delivery system.

This new State of art will contribute to the provision of international best practices that will eradicate medical tourism. The federal ministry of health is committed to providing efficient and quality healthcare service to the masses.

“On behalf of the minister, I specially appreciate the family of late Chief Olusola Dada and the Lions Clubs for increasing the bed capacity and building th4 dialysis centre. This is worthy of emulation.”

Responding to eulogies on behalf of the Olusola Dada Family, Matriarch of the Family, Lion Chief (Mrs) Omolola Dada, in her welcome address, expressed gratitude to God for the grace to witness the auspicious event.

She said, “I am elated as I welcome you to the official commissioning of Lion Isaac Olusola Dada Dialysis Centre and Renal Institute, LUTH, built in honour of my late husband. Initially, my husband had thought of a hospice but following a needs of assessment, the decision to build this edifice was taken.”

He was convinced that he and the Lions Clubs International could contribute towards the reduction of needless deaths occasioned by the paucity of functional infrastructure or facilities accessible to the common man.

“It was a 32-bed dialysis centre but again, God had other plans and today, partnering with LUTH and College of Medicine, University of Lagos, It Is now a sprawling institute. I am certain he will be full of smiles. His plan to forge new partnerships in service was fully achieved through this project.”
