OGSG INTENSIFIES EFFORT ON ROAD SAFETY MEASURES

The Ogun State Government says it will introduce speed readers and cameras as part of efforts to enforce the speed limit measures, for the safety of lives of the road users.

The State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun disclosed this in Abeokuta during the inauguration of the State Road Safety Advisory Committee, headed by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele.

Governor Abiodun said the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) would be provided with adequate logistics and human resources, as well as repositioning of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), to ensure that vehicles plying the roads are in good condition.

"We have observed the rapid increase of accidents on some of our roads, consequently, we will be enforcing speed limit measures, through the use of speed readers and cameras, with the provision of emergency services such as tow trucks, ambulances, fire trucks to assist accident victims", he noted.

Abiodun who emphasised on the importance of road to the socio-economic life of the people, said though efforts were being made to improve on the air and rail means of transportation, pointing out the need to pay attention to road and how to make it safer for users.

According to the Governor, “when road is compared to other means of transportation, it recorded the highest number of accidents, as a result of mechanical and human error. I believe it is time to put in place mechanism to reduce carnage on the roads”.

Abiodun hinted that his administration is partnering with the Federal Government and leading industries domicile in the State, to reconstruct some roads under the Free Tax system, urging the Committee to be efficient in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Responding on behalf of other members, the Committee Chairman, Engr. Salako-Oyedele, appreciated the Governor for the confidence reposed in them, promising to work with others in order to bring sanity on the roads.

Earlier in his remarks, the State Federal Road Safety Sector Corps Commander who is also the Secretary of the Committee, Mr. Ahmed Umar, said the move would assist the State to take its rightful place, assuring that his agency would continue to improve safety on the roads in line with global best practices.

Other members of the Committee are, Commissioners for Transportation in, Works and Infrastructure, Health, Justice, Education, Finance, Information and Strategy, Physical Planning and Urban Development, as well as Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and representative of the Nigeria Society of Engineers.
