Veteran sports journalist, ‘Fabio’ Lanipekun, dies 4 days after birthday

One of Nigeria’s foremost sports journalists and ace broadcaster, Fabio Lanipekun has died, just four days after celebrating his 80th birthday.

A Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) official close to the family confirmed his death.

It comes just a week after another iconic sports journalist, Sunny Emmanuel Ojegbase, died in the United States (U.S.) at 71 after a brief illness.

Confirming his death on social media, Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, via a post on her Twitter handle on Sunday night mourned the accomplished journalist.

She wrote: “I mourn the death of my former boss & mentor, Fabio Lanipekun who passed away today- 4 days after his 80th birthday.
Fabio encouraged my move from NTA Ibadan to Lagos, burnished my skills and taught me hardwork & discipline.
May God grant him peaceful repose & bless his family 🙏”

Born Adesola Lanipekun, he adopted the name ‘Fabio’ from a novel he read as a student at the Methodist Boys High School in Lagos.

While Fabio had stints with the print media at the now-defunct Daily Express, his glory days for most people was when he was at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA).

He rose to the position of Manager, Sports at the NTA before retirement.
