Cultists hack 28-year-old man to death in Lagos

Suspected cultists have hacked a 28-year-old man, Olanrewaju Ogunyemi, to death in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the incident occurred at around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21.

Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that a gang of machete-wielding men believed to be cult members stormed the community in search of Olanrewaju’s brother whose identity had yet to be known.

When they could not locate him at his residence, our correspondent was told, they traced him to his workshop on Abeokuta Street.

Upon arrival, they met Olanrewaju, who was said to be keeping watch for his brother.

A resident who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity for security reasons said the attackers descended on him with machetes, inflicting deep cuts to his body.

“When they got to his house and didn’t meet him, they perceived he must be in his furniture shop. On getting there, they met his younger brother who was staying there and watching over the place. Without saying a word, they brought out machetes and started cutting him. They cut his face, his back, and his hands,” the resident recounted.

Another resident who also did not want his name in print, described the sight of the aftermath as brutal, saying the victim died on the spot.

The source added that the attackers fled the scene before help could arrive leaving Olanrewaju’s lifeless body in a pool of blood.

“It was a gory sight. Olanrewaju usually stayed in the shop whenever his brother was not around. We got to know that they were actually looking for the elder brother. The entire community is still in shock. We’ve never seen anything this violent here,” the resident disclosed.

It was also learnt that the deceased victim was buried on Thursday while the whereabouts of his brother remained unknown.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said, “Olanrewaju Ogunyemi aged 28 was killed at about 7:45 pm in his furniture shop. A gang of suspected cultists attacked him with machetes on his face, head, back and hand. He died on the spot.”
