OGWAMA, Ogun Ministry of Environment Launch Blue Box Initiative to Boost Waste Segregation, Sustainability in Ado-Odo/Ota LG

Ado-Odo/Ota, Ogun State – October 7, 2025: In a major move to enhance environmental sustainability, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), in partnership with the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, has officially launched the Blue Box Initiative in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, Hon. Abayomi Semako Hunye, emphasized the importance of recycling during the launch event held at Ijamido Hall. With the theme "Significance of Waste Segregation in Sustainable Resource Utilization," Hon. Hunye urged the public to sell their old items for recycling purposes.

 Hon. Abayomi emphasized the importance of changing public attitudes toward waste management urging residents to actively participate by bringing old and recyclable items for proper sorting and recycling.

According to him “This initiative is not just another waste program, it’s a transformational strategy the Blue Box Initiative is designed to instill the culture of waste segregation at the household level. It will reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, promote recycling, and generate jobs within the waste management value chain.”

Hon. Semako said this marks a major push by the state government to promote waste separation at source and transition toward a circular economy emphasizing the urgent need for attitudinal change in waste handling and management across the state.

 He said the Blue Box Initiative is not just another waste program — it is a transformational strategy aimed at instilling the culture of waste segregation at the household level, adding that this initiative will significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, promote recycling, and create jobs in the waste value chain.

The Chief Executive Officer added that the Blue Box Initiative introduces color-coded bins for residents and commercial premises to separate recyclable materials such as plastics, paper, metals, and glass from organic and general waste. 

 He described the initiative as a "game changer" for Ogun State’s waste management system saying with the Blue Box Initiative, we are setting a benchmark for other states to follow. 

"We are building a cleaner, healthier, and more economically vibrant Ogun State, where waste becomes a resource,” he said.

The Director, Special Duties and Recycling, Mrs Babatunde Temitope highlighted how proper waste segregation can boost sustainable resource utilization, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect biodiversity.

 The two commissioner in Ogun State, Hon. Jide Ojuko pledged their support for the initiative, applauding the state’s vision for a greener future saying the launch of the Blue Box Initiative places Ogun State at the forefront of environmental innovation in Nigeria, aligning with national and global goals for sustainable development and climate action.
