OGUN HoS TASKS ACCOUNTANTS ON COMPLIANCE WITH BEST PRACTICES

  

Ogun State Head of Service, Alhaja Selimot Ottun has called on all professional Accountants in the Public Service to continuously update their knowledge and skills, in line with international best practices for effective performances.

Alhaja Ottun who gave the advice during a-2day workshop for Accountants, with the theme "Public Sector Accounting: Current Trends for Better Service Delivery", held at the Staff Development Centre, Oke- Ilewo, Abeokuta, said there is need for Accountants in the Public service sector to update their skills and consistently familiarize themselves with modern and evolving trends and knowledge in accounting just as their counterparts in the private sector. 

She described the Accountants as professionals whose function were significant to the success of any organization and Government, urging them to be level- headed in discharging their duties and adhere to the tradition of the cadre as embedded in ethics of the public service.

‘’As we all know, change is the only constant thing in life. This is why processes and procedures will always be evolving in line with the modern global practices. What might have been considered as new processes or innovations yesterday may likely be old today. In other words, it is very important for us as an individual, professional to remain relevant and update our processes periodically" she said.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Establishment and Training, Mrs. Lydia Fajounbo, said that the workshop was targeted at updating professionals Accountants on current trends for better productivity.

According to her, it is essential for Accountants to key into the new ways of doing things in-line with modern trend.

The Permanent Secretary and Accountant- General of Ogun State, Mr. Michael Idowu, while delivering a paper on "Revenue in the Public Sector, A Tool For achieving Excellent Social Responsibility of Government" said that no system of Government can survive without revenue generation as it is the life- wire of any meaningful development in both public and private sector.

He said the essence of revenue generation is to advance the welfare of citizens of a State with focus on promoting growth and development, advising Government on strategy for improving revenue as Public Private Partnership, Political will to enforce collection and attract of foreign Investors amongst others.
